What backup rings do

Backup rings are used to support the primary elastomer seal so it can maintain performance in high-pressure applications. They are commonly selected when groove clearances, pressure spikes, or operating conditions are more severe than a standard O-ring alone should handle.

• They sit beside the O-ring in the groove to provide support.
• They help reduce extrusion into the clearance gap.
• They are used in hydraulic, pneumatic, and demanding fluid systems.
• They can be selected as single-turn or split styles depending on installation needs.

Where backup rings fit best

Choose backup rings when pressure support, extrusion resistance, or longer seal life are important. Material, groove design, and pressure direction should always be checked together.

Backup ring selection is usually checked against the same O-ring ID and CS reference so groove fit and support can be reviewed together.
